The Lincoln Memorial was rededicated to mark the 2009 bicentennial of Pres. Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The memorial was originally dedicated on May 30, 1922. Speakers include Interior Sec. Ken Salazar, Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission co-chairman Harold Holzer, and Tuskegee Univ. Pres. Benjamin Payton.

 Lincoln Memorial Rededication

In 1939, contralto Marian Anderson was denied the opportunity to perform in DC's Constitution Hall, she subsequently held the concert Easter Sunday on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission commemorates this landmark event with mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, the women's a capella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, the Chicago Children's Choir and the U.S. Marine Band. Gen. Colin Powell (Ret.), former Sec. of State and chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, also makes remarks.

First, an encore presentation of the bicameral congressional celebration of Lincoln’s life held in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda and attended by President Obama. Historians Richard Norton Smith, Harold Holzer and Doris Kearns Goodwin are among the speakers honoring the man from Illinois. Later, an encore of the Abraham Lincoln Association birthday banquet in Springfield, Ill. -- Lincoln’s hometown -- which also featured President Obama.
